  Mea Shearim

The Orthodox area of Jerusalem, 1997.

It's a scene from a movie; the old beards with black coats shuffling out their little houses, horses and carts delivering groceries, kids with dreidels playing on the cobblestones.

Today it's a movie set, dolled-up technicolour, a construction ready for a Spielberg plot. Empty no, not empty. People live here. But not those people, from whom Yiddish was extracted and pushed into this stony world.
