In Kolomac, 2005

Visiting Kolomac (Koldemanz), my grandmother's family's village. My 2005 visit was the first time anyone from our family had been there since WWII.

  Entering Kolomac (Koldemanz)

Preamble to the story of my visit to Kolomac/Koldemanz.

In 2005 I set off on foot from the regional centre of Gryfice, Pomeria, towards Kolomac (Koldemanz), a small village eight kilometres away. My grandmother's family owned and ran the Koldemanz village estate for generations before being kicked out at the end of WWII by the advancing Russian army.

The estate houses typically formed the hub of German villages in Pomerania, around which the villagers' houses were clustered. Usually the villagers worked for the estate owners, who were German farming gentry of sorts.

I had with me a tiny pre-war map of the village, downloaded from the Internet.

When I returned to Germany from Pomerania, my relatives told me that while I was away they had uncovered a box of photos that my grandfather had kept to himself for decades. These old photos featured my family's life in pre-war and wartime Koldemanz, and are interspersed with the photos of my 2005 trip.

Pre-WWII low resolution map of Koldemanz downloaded from a genealogy website. The site owner didn't have a higher-res version. She had copied the map at a Mormon-run genealogy centre in the US.

Just entering the beginning of Kolomac (Koldemanz). It was very exciting to be finally encountering the village of my grandmother's family. My pre-war map proved still very accurate.
